An Phan is an actress, filmmaker, equestrian, and pageant community member based in Los Angeles. She fell in love with the Arts as a ballerina, artist, and pageant candidate, before going on to pursue theatre in high school. After obtaining her master’s in acting for film, Phan went on to appear as the first Asian-American girl on HBO’s hit series Euphoria, Showtimes’ Kidding as a leading co-star for the season finale, multiple Vietnamese talk shows, Vogue Italia, a TEDx speaker, and even the America Regency International 2021 Winner as Miss Vietnam! Offstage, she’s a professional equestrian, and combines her love for helping children with ADHD and autism with riding horses as a therapy tool – all while acting as ambassador for the National Organization of Vietnamese American Leadership of Greater Washington and promoting the work of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and working towards her Ph. D! Her advice to young actors? “Keep doing what you love with authenticity… [and] be sure to give back to your community.” Read on to learn more about An Phan and what makes her an Amazing Asian in the Arts!

Any advice for young people getting into the arts?

Keep doing what you love with authenticity. Know your worth/values and when you succeed, be sure to give back to your community.

How did you get your start?

I have loved the arts since I was a child. I did ballet and won numerous awards for my paintings and pageantry. As I got older, I started doing high school plays and theatre in my bachelor years, and decided I wanted to get my master’s in acting for film and that’s how the journey began.

What are some interesting facts about yourself?

I can fluently speak, read, write, and sing in Vietnamese. I was the America Regency International 2021 Winner as Miss Vietnam, and have judged pageants/helped train girls to prepare for competitions. I was also the front cover girl for multiple Vietnamese Magazines such as VietLifestyle Magazine. On top of that I have a BA and MFA honors degree in Acting for Film and am currently pursuing my Ph. D while auditioning, acting, and modeling on the side.

Do you have any organizations or non profits you work with you’d like to highlight?

NAMI.org, NAAAP org, and Traditional Equestrian School: Star Horses helping children with disabilities to ride horses as therapy.

Who do you admire?

I love Audrey Hepburn, Princess Diana, and Natalie Portman.

Do you have any other “special skills?”

I ride horses professionally and love helping children with ADHD, Autism ride horses as therapy. I can also sing in multiple languages, draw, sew, paint, and do professional pageant walks.

Do you have any self care practices you do to stay focused and sane? What was your self care routine before the pandemic and how has that (as well as your views of self care) changed throughout the pandemic?

I love talking to God. When things in life get too hard to handle, I kneeled down and pray. I love long walks at the beach and spending alone time. I often check in with my family and friends to see if they are doing okay but being alone does not mean you're lonely.
